About Ruhkiart

RUHKIA

(Pronounced ruk - eye - ah)

British African-Caribbean

Despite having started an art career at only 17 years old, Ruhkia has been improving her artistry for many years prior. Born in 2002, she is a realist artist living in London, who works with oil paints, African fabrics and, occasionally, gold leaf.

Her work seeks to coax a deeper connection between humans and nature through artistic exploration. The subjects are poised upon the canvas surrounded by various tropical plants and gold, resulting in the portrayal of the silent but ethereal power of the natural earth.

Ruhkia’s art often depicts black females, empowering a community which has been underrepresented in the arts for too long. Ever since 2018, Ruhkia has incorporated African wax print fabrics into many artworks. They feature wavy material cut-outs that harmonise with the beauty of the painted figures and root each piece in rich African-Caribbean culture.

Themes of reflection and introspection also run through her collection, Ruhkia’s figures can be seen deep in thought or staring meaningfully into the distance. Each has an individual story that manifests itself in innumerable ways within the mind of the viewer. Ruhkia’s art has a universal aesthetic that communicates with us all, emotionally and mentally.
